During a recent speech on the economy and job creation, Occupy members mic-checked President Obama. He acknowledged them and the fact that the so called “American Dream” is not working. “That’s not the way it’s supposed to be”, he said. As the Occupy group mic-checked their message, Obama supporters began chanting ‘Obama!” to drown them out.
Afterwards, one protester was able to hand deliver a written message to the President. It read:
“Mr. President: Over 4000 peaceful protesters have been arrested. While banksters continue to destroy the American economy with impunity. You must stop the assault on our 1st amendment rights. Your silence sends a message that police brutality is acceptable. Banks got bailed out. We got sold out.”
As we have seen, the top wealthiest people, through their banks, lobbyists, mayors and police departments, have orchestrated this attack upon peaceful Americans and the Occupy Movement. It remains doubtful whether a President could stop the attacks, although I feel that Obama is a caring man. He, like the entire federal government, is beholden to the wealthy.
Robert Reich made an excellent video about the unequal rights of free speech for the wealthy and silencing peaceful non-violent protests.
The wealthy have such an overwhelming control over our government today, that the average citizen’s voice cannot be heard. In addition, corporate interests and their sycophants in government have worked tirelessly to weaken government and empower corporate entities. When these corporate entities want to silence American citizens, they just order our police force to beat, pepper spray, and arrest us. Simple.
In light of who really controls the country at this time, I’d be very surprised if our President were able to stop the militarized actions against the American people, much as he may want to. I suppose his supporters can reassure themselves that at least he doesn’t want to torture everybody like the republican candidates for president. Don’t get me wrong, I like Obama, but he’s no fool, and he certainly knows who is really in control.
Remember the Bush-Cheney “free speech zones” where protesters could only demonstrate within a fenced area far away from the media? Obviously many powerful forces want to bring this back. At least President Obama hasn’t re-implemented those blatant anti-democratic practices.
Just as a refresher, let’s re-read the First Amendment:
First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Meanwhile, we are building a new civilization. You can’t pepper spray an idea.
