You’ve probably heard the news that several volunteers from “Food not Bombs” were arrested for feeding the homeless, citing an ordinance that the group has been challenging in court. Yes, evidently corporations can outsource American’s jobs while taking tax cuts and and devastate our middle class , Wall Street can gamble away millions of citizen’s retirement savings, and pay themselves enormous bonuses from bailouts, banks can illegally foreclose on American homes… but dare to feed the growing mass of homeless, hungry people and you’ll go to jail. WTF?
“They basically carted them off to jail for feeding hungry people… For them to regulate a time and place for free speech and to share food, that is unacceptable.”
And for more holiday warmth and generosity, cops at Occupy in Zuccotti Park refused to allow protestors to serve food in the park, although free hot drinks were handed out to anyone who said “Occupy Wall Street” by a supportive local vendor. Occupy held group meditations, readings of Martin Luther King’ s “Beyond Vietnam” speech, and a sing-along of carols and John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
So although the camps have been viciously destroyed, thousands have been arrested (with even more being beaten and pepper-sprayed) and the media has moved on…the new society is still in process. We have not given up.
Many more events are planned for New Years Eve — so keep your hearts and eyes open!
UPDATE: sad and alarming, but not at all surprising. This article details some of the militarization of our police forces, using post 911 mountains of money showered upon weapons manufacturers all in the name of “keeping us safe”.
