Christian Dominionists

UPDATE Feb 4 2017: With the recent election coup which placed Dominionist Mike Pence into the Vice Presidency, it is more urgent than ever to be aware of, and understand the goals of Christian Dominionism.

Christian Dominionism is a term that encompasses a variety of Christian conservative groups including:

  • Moral Majority
  • Christian Reconstructionism
  • Christian Nationalism
  • Quiverfull , The Gathering etc
  • The Christian Right
  • The Tea Party

Basing their ideas on a very literal version of the old testament bible, Domionists believe that the United States was founded as a “Christian Nation” — ignoring the Enlightenment period in which our country was founded, which centered upon reason as the primary source of authority, and the fact that “god” is not mentioned in the Constitution.  Their unifying goal is to end our secular democracy, and to substitute a “Biblical” Theocracy in its place.  And they’ve completely taken over the GOP.

To me, the importance of keeping as many of these people out of government right now is top priority, even over making a third-party protest vote.  Why?  Because these people are not only deranged, but they are dangerous religious zealots.

Those of us who believe in freedom, justice, and love… need to be aware of this movement, and share our knowledge with others.  Understanding their worldview can help us work against their goals.

Dominionism Defined: The belief that Christians are destined to take over and rule the world by taking “dominion” over the political process and reinstituting biblical law. Many perceive this as a campaign to use the United States military to create a global Christian Empire.

Think it can’t happen here?  Take a look at this graphic.  It shows a relatively secular, open society in pre-Ayatolla Iran 1970s.  Afghanistan had a similar open society before they, too, were overtaken by religious zealots.

These countries were NOT ALWAYS controlled by conservative fundamentalists.  Women had access to education and employment.  Then  their Religious Right  took over.

Unimaginable as it is, we must now protect our society so that we can continue to evolve into a more just, fair society — or we may face a similar fate.  The most strict Domionists advocate biblical death penalties for a variety of “offenses”. How Dominionists Gain Power

A very small group of super wealthy families (the 0.01%)  make the most political donations in the US., and therefore largely control the politics of this country. These people generally don’t really care how our social policy is structured, (since the laws of any one country don’t apply to them anyway); their main interest is in retaining and increasing their wealth.  And unfortunately, many of them find the Dominionist Tea Partiers, with their hostility to science, social progress and clean environment – to be profitable bedfellows.  This alliance has directed unlimited money to flow to support Dominionist Tea Party candidates, and essentially has purchased elections.

Each Dominionist politician that is seated is another tool for dismantling the hard-one rights and freedoms we now enjoy.

Historically, this nasty strain of religious ideology mixed with heartless cruelty got their first intoxicating taste of political power when Reagan allowed the “Moral Majority” (they were neither moral, nor the majority) access to the White House and influence on policy.  And over the years, the Moral Majority has metastasized into the Christian Dominionist movement.  Their most powerful political weapon: the Tea Party.

Working Against Equality & Liberty

As minorities call for justice and an end to institutional police violence in their communities, they’re opposed by those who call themselves “Christian conservatives”.

LGBTQ people, having recently won the right to marry, still face a ridiculous amount of persecution from those calling themselves “Christian conservatives”.

Immigrants are routinely scapegoating and vilified by people whose own parents and grandparents were immigrants. Most of these cruel people call themselves ” Christian conservatives”.

Women who expect that in a democracy  they will  be able to make their own reproductive decisions are finding that republican states are taking away the, even these rights, even threatening the availability of birth control. The people who are blocking their rights identify as “Christian conservatives”.

Environmentalists and scientists who are concerned about climate change and its impact upon civilization find attempts to educate and pass common sense climate protection laws and treaties blocked by flat-earther Tea Party politicians who refuse to accept science. These obstructionists refer to themselves as “Christian conservatives”.

Domionist groups have dumped hundreds of millions of dollars into their authoritarian religious attacks on others. within the United States and Internationally:

[The Gathering] have bankrolled, from Uganda to Russia, the mounting international war on LGBT rights; evangelical opposition to healthcare reform and action to curb climate change; the promotion of young-earth creationism and Intelligent Design; ministries training African leaders in the “biblical worldview”; legal efforts that have fought against same-sex marriage and LGBT rights in the United States, and have forced anti-gay fundamentalist bible clubs into thousands of U.S. public schools…

Its foundation heads are plaintiffs in a legal challenge to healthcare reform now before the U.S. Supreme Court and they are leading efforts to attack organized labor and defund public schools. –

Seeing a pattern yet?

So, if we sit out an election and let them win – even in local races -all of us lose the rights that we have fought so hard to attain.

I’ve been paying attention to this “Christian Taliban” movement for several decades.  This is a far-right radical Christian movement that believes they must take over our government, and eventually all governments of the world.  Dominionists are reported to have infiltrated the military, police, and our FBI and CIA.  There are a whole nest of them in the House of Representatives and Senate.  And their religious leaders preach Dominionism from the pulpit.

Yes, their goal is to overthrow our secular Democracy and replace it with their own brand of Theocracy.

I am not overstating this.  Here’s Pat Robertson:

God’s plan is for His people, ladies and gentlemen, to take dominion. . . .What is dominion? Well, dominion is Lordship. He wants His people to reign and rule with Him. . . but He’s waiting for us to. . . extend His dominion. . . .And the Lord says, “I’m going to let you redeem society. There’ll be a reformation. . . .We are not going to stand for those coercive utopians in the Supreme Court and in Washington ruling over us any more. We’re not gonna stand for it. We are going to say, ‘we want freedom in this country, and we want power. . . .'”
—Pat Robertson 2006

Some of the more high profile Dominionists have been Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, but there are a whole host of them now in the heavily gerrymandered House. It will take all our votes and possibly lawsuits challenging the gerrymandered maps to pry them out of there.

The Christian Domionist movement really began with a book by Orthodox Presbyterian minister Rousas John Rushdoony, who exhorted Christians to take over the world through political means.  Rushdoony believed that the federal government should concern itself only with national defense and empire building, while education and social welfare should be handed over to the Christian churches. Note that this is the main tenant of the Tea Party.

Many Domionists actually promote death penalties for homosexuality, sex outside of marriage, blasphemy, atheism, rebellious children, mysticism, astrology, paganism, etc. and want to create a Theocracy similar to that which currently exists in Saudi Arabia – with themselves at the top.   They support slavery as it was in the Old Testament.  (no, not kidding.)

They believe the world is between 4 and 6,000 years old and reject any science or teaching that contradicts their literal interpretation of their bible.  These people are dangerous because they’ve spent the past several decades infiltrating and undermining our government beginning at the local levels – school boards, usually.  A short term goal is to convince citizens that government doesn’t work — and they are in place to make sure that it doesn’t.

Many were home schooled with specific right-wing teachings, and then went on to attend Jerry Fallwell’s Christian Fundamentalist “school,” Patrick Henry University.  They gained a lot of power during the Bush/Cheney administration, as well as sucking up a lot of taxpayer money for things like misinforming kids about sex and science.

We smiled at their weird beliefs and were tolerant — oh, so tolerant — of their flat-earth philosophy.  And we were tolerant at our own peril, but most of us didn’t see it.

While we tolerated them, they taught their legions NOT to tolerate us.  They believe in literal demons, and tell their followers that those of us who believe in social justice, civil rights, feminism, and science are indeed “demons”.  You may have seen them gather around Sarah Palin to pray for her, speaking in tongues for protection from demons and witchcraft.  Yes, it seems ludicrous, but beware religious fanatics.  They really believe this sh*t.

Some of them became demonstrators outside of women’s clinics, mosques, and temples…others became bombers, murderers, and terrorists.  Their Christian Nationalism was easily wedded to White Nationalism (ironic, since they worship a Middle Eastern created god, but nevermind).  They are the Tea Party, and they have an increasing overlap with the KKK, who, after all, claim to have “a gun in one hand and a bible in the other”.  It actually makes sense.

It is my strong belief that now, we must – absolutely – join together with all rational people: Greens, Democrats, Liberals, Socialists, Intellectuals, Progressives, Anarchists…we must UNITE TOGETHER and route out every last Tea Party Dominonist from our government. ( Not regular “christians”, who do not have a plan to destroy all of our institutions and our form of government.)   But every Dominionist must be removed from positions of authority from which they undermine democracy.

And I understand that this seems extreme, but it’s only because we don’t understand.  No one is as dangerous as a person who believes god is giving them orders.  Zealots happily kill for religion.  We see it in the Taliban and other extremist groups, but we somehow are ignoring it in our own midst.

While the Dominionists point at the Muslim terrorists, they distract us from the White Nationalist terrorists in our own midst.  And they distract us from the softer terrorists: the ones who would take away our civil liberties just as surely as the Taliban devastated womens’ lives in Afghanistan.

And if we don’t insist upon our right to  vote, and exercise it in every election, stop voter suppression, and become a strong united coalition,  the Dominionists stand to make our country unrecognizable.

Hi Brian, Thanks so much for letting me know about the 404. I changed the title after publishing, which screwed everything up.
To correct that problem, I’ve created a new post with the title, which has a link to the post in question.
      Shouldn’t post stuff when I’m distracted, I guess. 🙂
